"Often considered Americas last frontier, Alaska is an exciting destination for the adventure traveler. As well as the glaciers of the Inside Passage that are so familiar to cruise ship passengers, Juneau and the Southeast Panhandle is also the location of the very interesting Sitka National Historic Park and the town of Skagway, staging point for the Klondike Gold Rush. Visit the fascinating and isolated Aleutian Islands, and the communities of King Salmon and Katmai National Park and Preserve on the Alaskan Peninsula. Central Alaska has the world famous Denali National Park, and it is linked by one of the worlds great scenic railroads to the cities of Anchorage—the state's main commercial centre and home to half of its residents, and Fairbanks—at the geographical center of Alaska and a major supply point for the lucrative oil industry". A
stately spruce and cottonwood forest thick with ferns and shrubs gives
a visitor few clues that Kenai Fjords National Park is a young and
dynamic landscape. Yet, its seemingly quiet nature is a sometimes
dramatic work in progress.
Established in 1978, Kenai Fjords
became a national park two years later as part of the Alaska National
Interest Lands Conservation Act. The story of the landscape is much
more ancient. The more than 300,000 acre Harding Icefield tops the
park. The icefield is a relic of the last ice age, which covered much
of North America. The ice is still in flux. Generally speaking,
glaciers are retreating along the park coast, uncovering glacially
carved valleys that fill with sea water to form the stunning fjords for
which the park is famous.

I stood at the observation point on the balcony at the Visitor Center overlooking the great Mendenhall Glacier at Juneau, Alaska. Before me was a beautiful scene. The glacier reflected in the large lake. Ooh, ahh. Both to the left and right were mountains. It was a beautiful clear day. I watched the people too, walking around taking photos, and looking at the scenery before us and at the displays in the center, just a few feet away. |
